Jonathon Hair

After leaving university, Jonathon worked for six years in private practice for a local firm (now part of Azets UK) based in Newcastle upon Tyne. During that time, he became a chartered certified accountant and a chartered tax adviser.

Jonathon then joined HMRC, initially working as a case director in the ‘Affluent’ business area. This role involved supporting officers on their largest and most complex interventions including with alternative dispute resolution. During this time, he became one of the original enquiry co-ordinators for the High Risk Wealth Programme and completed an MSc in Taxation and Fiscal Policy.

Subsequently, Jonathon became the Wealthy Compliance Lead for the North East (previously referred to as Lead CRM in the High Net Worth Unit) where he had overall responsibility for HMRC’s relationship with 1,800 HNWIs. In addition to leading the customer compliance managers, he set the strategy for the compliance and risk approach to our designated population, and personally led on some of the most complex and contentious interventions in the unit.

Jonathon was then asked to set up and lead a new unit in WMBC Wealthy tasked with operationalising Autumn Statement 2022 fiscal funding. Through his teams, he led on some of the most prominent personal tax risks for HMRC as well as taking over responsibility for the High Risk Wealth Programme and Wealthy’s approach to key sectors.

In November 2025, Jonathon joined Grant Thornton’s Tax Dispute Resolution team as an Associate Director.
